Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope you find an idea or two that will lighten your load and make you smile!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I'm trying to be especially mindful about and grateful for all the things that I LOVE in life -- and careerwise that certainly includes library centers! If you're trying to create a library program filled with wonder, high student engagement, authentic learning, and opportunities for fun, you've got to figure out how to add some library centers into your mix! </span><span style="text-align: left;">I can help...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the 25 years that I've been a teacher-librarian, I've gotten to help kids try out hundreds of intriguing centers. In my early years as a librarian (1993-2005) my centers mostly involved book nooks, listening stations, puppets, reader's theater, and felt board "retelling sets" -- along with lots of folder games and their many, many colorful pieces to print, laminate, trim, manipulate...and sometimes lose! Yikes!! (The kids pictured below are now in COLLEGE by the way! Oh my!) </div>

Fast forward with me several years and you'll probably agree that library center resources have become more high-tech. From 2005 to the present, we've been blessed with more access to gadget-based centers, and these days, I'm thankful to be able to provide a mixture of robots, STEM sets, makerspace projects, and online resources to help with video creation and research. (Although my students also still seem to enjoy the low-tech centers, too!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think the most exciting thing about today's library centers is the variety. There's absolutely NOT a right or wrong way to select, set-up, and/or facilitate your centers!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Figure out what kinds of resources you have readily available... and then build upon those by coming up with a plan to acquire more "stuff" if needed (devices, supplies, manipulatives, etc.). I've curated my center supplies, devices, and gadgets by using book fair proceeds, holding a Read-a-Thon, shopping for bargains on Ebay, asking for parent donations, hosting Papa John's Pizza nights, and writing grants through Donors Choose. My school district has also partnered with a local children's museum (Little Rock's Museum of Discovery) to utilize STEM kits that we rotate every six weeks. Finally, teacher-librarians who also serve as TpT sellers (<a href="https://teacherspayteachers.com/Store/That-Library-Girl" target="_blank">such as That Library Girl!</a>) are a bounty of free and inexpensive resources that can help get your library centers program off the ground quickly!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you're planning, it's important to make sure that your center activities support your library media curriculum and, of course, your students'direct needs. It's also essential to figure out a system for facilitating center rotation that works for YOU. (I have an upcoming blog post about my digital system that I'm LOVING this year!) Please remember, there's no one way that will work for everyone. There are MANY ways to be successful with library centers. Stay in your lane and give yourself grace to figure out what's best for YOU and your students!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like I said, I'll be sharing my system for rotating centers per grade level in a few weeks, but for now, I want to share one of my most popular centers. (This center is the one that I will be giving away for the "Love Those Library Centers" blog hop as well!) It's the "Hot Cocoa Stand" version of my "Building with the Engineering Design Process" center! Here's the link to my TpT store and <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Library-Center-Engineering-Design-Process-Building-a-Hot-Cocoa-Stand-4353955" target="_blank">the hot cocoa stand resource.<span style="font-family: , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.6px;"></span></a></div>

<div>
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The idea for the hot cocoa stand version came around Christmas time. We were working on practicing the engineering design process as we built with Legos. One of the boys mentioned that it seemed a little silly to be building a lemonade stand when he was really craving hot cocoa -- and inspiration was sparked! Whether your weather is hot or cold outside, BOTH versions help students practice planning and creating a team project. The engineering design process steps that I include are "ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, and IMPROVE." This is a great follow up to my October project, the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Storybook-Pumpkin-Patch-Book-Character-Pumpkins-with-Super-3-4098325" target="_blank">Storybook Pumpkin Patch</a> , which promotes the Super 3 "Plan-Do-Review" model.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The hot cocoa stand resource includes a PowerPoint presentation, which I project when I'm sharing the center for the first time. (I've thrown in a fun, chocolate-y, nonfiction idea to serve as an introduction as well!) Besides these pieces, the resource includes a PDF version of the PowerPoint slides for printing a center booklet. The rest of the resource includes the students' planning page and an instruction page to help with setting up and running the center. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This center's prep is pretty easy! Once the planning sheets are printed and the center booket is prepped, all you have to do is provide some buiding bricks, such as Legos, and let the creativity flow! The planning sheet serves as the exit ticket, so your assessment piece is taken care of, too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you introduce the engineering design process in your library? Do you tie it to Big 6 or Super 3 like I've been doing? I'd love to hear your thoughts about it, so please comment below.</div>

<br />
When I first heard the story, I was SO SO SO proud of <i>her</i>... I think I'll call her "Lily." In fact, I was a little in awe. She's so little -- in age and in size -- yet so courageous.<br />
<br />
Then, I kept thinking about it... and I'd smile... and sigh, wishing for a bit of that courage at her young age (and even at my not-so-young age!) I thought about it some more, and decided I wanted to share this story with someone who would get it -- someone who might need to know about it and pass it along somehow. Since Lily's mother gave me permission to share...here goes...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEyp_TNL-EWfy8LmjP8k_1ajI5o-d5XLiYLv15rfMynIUQM9G0UgHB7BaqXmjsL2ELtZ0xD5gKUvegp0JGs9gIN3o0hsDIwpTfQAvdRL7ZUwizohSiRZULl2lHZUlJGriaLLqAFr_aaWT2/s1600/My+Secret+Bully.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="400" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEyp_TNL-EWfy8LmjP8k_1ajI5o-d5XLiYLv15rfMynIUQM9G0UgHB7BaqXmjsL2ELtZ0xD5gKUvegp0JGs9gIN3o0hsDIwpTfQAvdRL7ZUwizohSiRZULl2lHZUlJGriaLLqAFr_aaWT2/s320/My+Secret+Bully.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<br />
It all started with a second grade lesson on author's purpose.Toward the end, I was book talking a stack of titles and letting my students discuss what the authors' purposes might be. After awhile, I held up an "Everyone" book called <i>My Secret Bully</i> by Trudy Ludwig.<br />
<br />
As soon as I started describing the plot of this book, it seemed like my kids' engagement bumped up a notch or two. Something about Monica and Katie, and their somewhat off-kilter friendship, struck a cord of recognition, I think. I saw little heads nodding slightly and mouths frowning just a bit. It appeared that several of my students could relate to Monica's experience. I had the quick thought that some of them might also have a "friend" who for whatever reason has begun mean name-calling, undeserved exclusion, and purposeful embarassment in front of other students. Soon, a copy of Ms. Ludwig's book was in Lily's hands. She checked it out and took it home.<br />
<br />
A week or so later, Lily's grandmother came to volunteer in the library, and she mentioned the book. Apparently, Lily's mother had read it to Lily that very night. Afterward, Lily's mother had quietly asked her if she had noticed anything familiar about the story. Lily nodded and the story of her own classroom bully came tumbling out. Just this moment of understanding and connection between a mother and daughter would have been enough to melt this librarian's heart... but wait, there's more.<br />
<br />
It turns out that brave, young Lily took the story to heart and confronted her personal Katie at school later that week. Lily told the other girl that she was tired of being bullied and that it had to stop. The other little girl denied any wrongdoing at first, but Lily stood firm on the issue and explained exactly what she would do if any bullying occurred again.<br />
<br />
Now, if this was an old, afterschool special from days gone by, the two might have ended up besties or something. That hasn't happened... yet... and it may not. The happy ending of this story is that an author wrote a very special book about a difficult subject. She wrote it in such a way that a little girl saw herself in the main character's shoes -- and recognized a bad situation in a familiar light. Like Monica in the story, Lily was able to talk the situation over with a very supportive mother. Together, Lily and her mother talked about how to confront the person who was causing Lily's angst. Then, Lily gathered her courage and took the next step... she confronted the other girl kindly, but firmly... and believe it or not, things are better. Not perfect, but better. <br />
<br />
Librarians call the use of books to promote healing of some kind... bibliotherapy. It's a wonderful and powerful tool. It's what we do... we get books in the hands of kids who need them. It was a privilege to see the concept play out so beautifully in our little library media center.That Library Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02319316366626816941noreply@blogger.com0Arkansas34.364593946152446 -92.691273789881109-16.944648553847557 -175.30846678988109 85.67383644615245 -10.074080789881108tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694841406516996869.post-16440575963446869292019-01-23T23:08:00.003-06:002019-01-23T23:08:56.107-06:00Ready to Stomp, Chomp, and Read?<br />

Book fair -- <span style="font-family: "KG Corner of the Sky"; font-size: 9pt;">yikes. You too? It'll be here before we know it! Actually, you're probably like me...I love
to see the book fair arrive, but it still stresses me out a little! There’s so much to think through during the planning stages to
make sure EVERYTHING runs well!</span><br />

Scholastic, they share so many good resources through the chairperson’s toolkit.
Still... and maybe I’m just picky... (okay, I'm TOTALLY picky!!!) but I usually find myself remaking a lot of the
forms and things. I like to consolidate info that I’ll need (or the kids will need) and I like to make the forms
more organized. (Plus, I'll admit it -- I want my forms to look cute-sy! Don’t judge -- it makes
me so happy…and cute clipart has a lot less calories than chocolate!!) </span></div>

early… like in DECEMBER for a mid-March fair! And... here’s why… last year, during the
week of my spring fair, we had a tragic, unexpected death in my family. It was
terribly sad, and my husband and I needed to leave immediately and travel six
hours north to support our family members. Problem was… I just wasn’t QUITE
ready for my fair. Not good.</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; language: en-US; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; mso-line-break-override: none; punctuation-wrap: hanging; text-align: left; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

<span style="font-family: "KG Corner of the Sky"; font-size: 9pt;">I mean, my students usually shop during library classes (5 classes per day) and I had a great sub lined up who has volunteered at my book fairs in the past. So, that was going to be okay. My specials squad and some PTO moms had promised to pop in and check on her as they could. </span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; language: en-US; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; mso-line-break-override: none; punctuation-wrap: hanging; text-align: left; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

<span style="font-family: "KG Corner of the Sky"; font-size: 9pt;">Another LMC volunteer -- who's a retired media specialist and a GOOD friend -- stepped up to cover my parent-teacher conference nights, so that was a HUGE, ENORMOUS blessing! I had before school and after school shopping sessions planned, too,
though. Yikes! I just cancelled those. After all, that's a lot to put on a friend! And, to make things worse for her...I had a lot of brand new volunteers who
had not helped at a book fair anywhere before! I felt terrible about it.</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; language: en-US; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; mso-line-break-override: none; punctuation-wrap: hanging; text-align: left; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

<span style="font-family: "KG Corner of the Sky"; font-size: 9pt;">As always, my book fair was all
planned out perfectly…in my brain. I can kind of run a fair on autopilot after 40+ of them...but on paper? To leave for a sub and my precious volunteer? Not so much. As we drove
north, I sure wished that I had been able to leave behind a little folder of helpful forms and tools. I felt like I had dropped the book fair ball in a big way. So, I decided during that funeral
trip that I would NEVER be caught so unprepared again.</span><span style="font-family: "KG Corner of the Sky"; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "KG Corner of the Sky"; font-size: 9pt;">This resource is the result.</span></div>

I'm kinda excited about my little collection of forms, volunteer nametags, thank you notes, dino décor, and so on! Mine's all printed, prepped, and organized for
our upcoming, "dino-mite" book fair. It felt SO AMAZING that I decided someone else might benefit from my pre-planning, too, Sooo, if you're interested... take a peek at it in my TpT store. Many of the forms are editable, so you can personalize and re-word to your heart's content! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Does putting away all of the Christmas decorations make you feel a little glum? I was in the mood to make something fun and whimsical to save my library media center from the winter doldums... and this was it! I used to love those little boxes of conversation hearts when I was a kid. (Even then I loved WORDS!) I remember sitting on the curb with my friends, taking turns digging them out one by one, and reading what they said before letting them melt away in our mouths -- such a sweet memory!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have one spot on my LMC's entry table that needs something tall. So I decided to make a valentine tree. I came up with 36 book-themed, conversation-heart-worthy sayings...repurposed some sparkly branches that came from the floral department at Walmart once upon a time... and found a bright blue vase to serve as the base. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I tucked in a few sprigs of "early spring" silk flowers to add interest. I printed the hearts onto white cardstock, and then one of my precious library volunteers trimmed the hearts for me. She glued them onto some scrapbooking paper odds and ends, and I retrimmed them before laminating them. Finally, I hole punched each - and used baker's twine to tie the hearts onto the little "tree." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's simple and colorful... and it's oh so fun to hear the kids reading the silly sayings. (Although I DID have to explain what "ISBN Dreaming of You" meant! (That one was especially to make you media specialists smile!) There's one more saying in the bunch that will probably only make sense to us, but I couldn't resist it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can grab this resource in my TpT store! (It includes bulletin board letters that spell "Let's Talk about Books" with a book recommendation form for your students to fill out. After all, February is the perfect time to share about books we LOVE, right?!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm thankful and excited to share that my <b>2018 New Year's Resolution has been COMPLETED</b>! <b>I kicked a HUGE Diet Dr. Pepper habit</b> that spanned many, many years -- from high school to late December 2017 -- with the exception of nine months when I was pregnant in 1993! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I replaced my extreme diet soda habit (about 2 liters per day) with lots of water and a daily tea combo that my little sister dubbed "Julie Juice." (The recipe is on the graphic above.) Replacing (what I believe to be) bone-leaching, insulin-spiking, sugar-craving diet soda with healthier alternatives was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To be honest, I had days during the first months of 2018 when I still thought about grabbing a DDP, but I never had the horrible withdrawals that I feared. I KNOW the credit for this goes straight to my amazing, faithful God because I prayed -- A LOT -- for Him to please grant me a broken stronghold, an absence of withdrawal symptoms, and consistent strength to say NO -- and then I drank water or my Plexus tea concoction instead -- always reminding myself that I was replacing bad chemicals with healthier choices. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My benefits have included better sleep, better blood work, more energy, less achy joints, and a surprising switch to living sugar-free (in the last 6 months of 2018!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think reaching the halfway mark at 6 months with no diet soda helped me realize I was strong enough to make more positive changes! So, right before school started, I started cutting the sugar and eating more of a Keto-type diet too! I'm still shocked that I'm doing this and that I've lost over 20 pounds! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In mid-July, my husband decided (on his own!) to give up HIS diet soda habit as well! Now, he drinks 2% milk, Plexus in plain water, and an occasional Coke when we eat out at restaurants, instead. At first, he struggled with tiredness and some headaches, but he persevered -- even through some very stressful work situations -- and is still going strong toward his one-year free mark! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm sharing today because I'm feeling super happy and proud of actually keeping a resolution for an entire year! It's the first time I've kept up with a resolution for all 365 days! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do believe that prayer and the Plexus Slim drinks have played a role in my success! If you want to learn more about prayer, please comment below, and we can chat about it. (One of my favorite subjects!) If you're interested in learning more about Plexus, please check out my website at <a href="https://plexusworldwide.com/thatlibrarygirl/home">https://plexusworldwide.com/thatlibrarygirl/home</a> and do a bit more research. I'll admit that I was sketical at first, too, until I saw an old high school classmate shrink before my eyes on Facebook! She had always been one of the heavier girls, like me, but all of a sudden, she started looking slimmer, and a LOT younger too -- so I was prompted to try it for myself! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy New Year to you! Whatever your dream for 2019 might be... I'd like to encourage you to just GO FOR IT! Even if your dream seems daunting today, make up your mind that you can do it! Please know that I'm praying for you! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I mailed our letters to <a href="https://www.operationgratitude.com/" target="_blank">Operation Gratitude</a> today -- fourteen earnest, warm-hearted notes thanking unknown soldiers for their sacrifices this holiday season. Each one was inspired by a sweet Christmas story of selflessness and teamwork. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You see, last week I read <i>The Night Santa Got Lost : How NORAD Saved Christmas</i> to my fourth graders. I had run across and gotten interested in this book last spring, but had to wait to share it until December rolled around, of course. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I introduced the book by explaining the purpose of NORAD to my classes. I pointed out Colorado Springs (where Peterson Air Force Base is located) on a digital map and showed them the official website of the <a href="http://www.norad.mil/" target="_blank">North American Aerospace Defense Command</a>. Then, I told them the funny, but true story of how a misprint in a Sears department store Christmas ad gave out NORAD's secret military hotline phone number by accident. I told them what happened when the hotline rang and a General answered, fearing the worst, but instead hearing an innocent, little kid asking to speak to Santa! Just like me...they were hooked by this lead-in -- and wanted to hear Keane's story of NORAD's attempt to track and rescue Old Saint Nick one Christmas Eve. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Check out the whole Sears story <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-norad-santa-tracker-typo-20141219-story.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This book was written in the same rhyming pattern as Clement Moore's "Twas the Night Before Christmas." As it unfolds, Michael Keane explains how inclement weather caused Santa to leave early on his Christmas Eve flight one year. NORAD, watching the skies as always, was on top of it as Santa departed, but they soon lost him from the radar screen! All available help rushed to the rescue to save Santa and Christmas... but Santa was well-hidden, buried in a snow drift! By the time brave soldiers located the jolly man and dug him out of the snow and ice, it was too late for him to finish his route and get the presents delivered on time! In a spirit of true military comradery, soldiers around the world combined their resources to help Santa finish the job! I loved this book and my students did, too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After reading, I showed my students <a href="http://www.noradsanta.org/" target="_blank">NORAD's "Santa Tracker" site</a>, and we browsed through all of the information, games, music, video clips, and so on in the sidebar. We also chatted about our family members who are in (or were once) in the military. As things sometimes do in a library, talk meandered into a call for action. Several of the kids decided to team up and write notes thanking the soldiers for their service. All I had to do was find an organization to help us deliver them... and that was Operation Gratitude. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After this afternoon filled with sweet letter-writing, I was inspired to put together a little library center resource so others could duplicate our project, if desired. It includes a bit of "Dear Hero" note paper and some other book suggestions, along with a word search featuring words from the Keane book. You can find it in <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Library-Center-The-Night-Santa-Got-Lost-How-NORAD-Saved-Christmas-4247766" target="_blank">my TpT store</a>. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whoa...I feel like this school year is flying by -- don't you?! Computer Science Education Week snuck up on me this year! Fortunately, library media specialists in my state were asked to merge the new <a href="http://www.arkansased.gov/public/userfiles/Learning_Services/Curriculum%20and%20Instruction/Frameworks/Computer%20Science/Grades_K_4_Computer_Science_01152016.pdf" target="_blank">Arkansas Computer Science Frameworks</a> into our library media lesson plans this fall. So, in the first week of December, we happen to be at a good spot to introduce a fun binary code project that's perfect for Hour of Code!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My fourth graders were ready to tackle framework "D.4.4.2
Use 0’s and 1’s to represent
data (e.g., encode and decode
a word with 0’s and 1’s)." I wanted them to gain some background knowledge before working on an ornament project using their initials. A little homemade PowePoint guided my lesson points, some group practice got our brains moving in the right direction, and finally, I sent them to tables to work in pairs or individually. </div>

I loved the glare on this picture because I think it represents the chorus of "OHHHH!"s that I kept hearing as they began to talk it out and work together. You could practically see the light bulbs dancing above their heads! </div>

My ornament idea was pretty much 100% scrapped in favor of bracelets, but no worries here. My fourth graders have a pretty sound, if basic, understanding of binary code! So... #feelingaccomplished</div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;">Doesn't it seem like everyone could use a little <b>brain break</b>, or maybe a <b>brain boost</b>, during the long school days in December? For my holiday tip, I'm sharing a little "wiggle break" resource for preschool through first grade that doubles as a review of <b>story elements</b>. </span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;">My </span><b style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;">December "Move It! Move It!"</b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;"> resource is a set of PowerPoint slides that displays 18 mini stories about several December holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's Eve. As I project each story on our white board and read it aloud, my students turn on the drama and pretend to be the main character - acting out the story - beginning, middle, and end! These are great when you need a quick transition activity, or when your students are just feeling a little restless.</span><br />

I hope your school year has gotten off to a great start... OR... I wish you blessings as you BEGIN 2018-2019 in the next few weeks! We just finished WEEK 2, and even the kindergarten kids are starting to settle down a bit.<br />
<br />
My amazing teaching team -- lovingly known around school as #SPECIALS -- and made up of library, music, art, gifted-and-talented, and PE teachers -- joined together last year to make our behavior management a little more cohesive for the students. We even have our own behavior form home -- with an auto-carbon copy! (Fancy, huh?!)<br />
<br />
I'm the last one to get my BRAVO board finished and hung up, I'm afraid, but I think it turned out pretty well... and the kids are enjoying it. (Actually, so am I!)<br />
<br />
I created four goal cards and spent a lot of time explaining my expectations during the kids' first library visit. I started every class out with two fuzzies in their classroom pockets... and some classes lost those the very first week! (Yikes.) BUT... I think I made my point on expectations and proved that I was serious. Things were much better during our second week together.
<br />

After I posted my photo on "That Library Girl's" Facebook page and on "That.Library.Girl's" Instagram this morning, I began to receive some questions about how I did this... or where I bought that. So, I typed up a little TpT freebie to explain where I purchased everything that I used for my BRAVO board, what I use as "prizes" -- and I threw in a copy of my goal icon cards, too!
You can grab it at my TpT store... <a href="https://bit.ly/2NihEMK">https://bit.ly/2NihEMK</a>.<br />

Hey library friends... are any of you interested in helping with a <b>"50 states" postcard project</b>?!<br />
<br />
It's a cool pen pal project -- from one library to another! You have to buy (or create) 50 postcards to represent your state and have your kids fill them out.<br />
<br />
(I'm making mine a library center for 3rd grade... and I'm going to try to get the postcards from our state tourism department. I'm going to use book fair proceeds to buy the stamps and mail them to all of the other schools.)<br />
<br />
So anyway, your kiddos will have to research your state and find lots of interesting facts to promote all the cool things that make your state such a great place to live! I'm going to have mine work in teams to create the postcards.
The photo above came from Google Images, but it belongs to the blogger of "Teachin' by the Bay!" It's amazing, right?? This is what I envision OUR school's bulletin board will look like by the end of the year! I think my kids will LOVE this research center! I also the think my kids and teachers in all of the other grades will love looking at the post cards from across the nifty fifty United States! I may have to ask our music teacher to help me teach them that old song. I will need help!! HA!)<br />
<br />
Here's a message from our organizer, Brenda Hauff (bhauff@usd259.net) that came today -- EDITED 8/6/2018 "We are still needing classrooms from Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. I’m excited for all the great learning experiences that are going to happen this year."<br />
<br />
ME TOO!

Okay -- that's it! I hope that some of you will want to jump in and swap postcards with us! Let's work together as librarians to build some positive community and to talk to our precious kiddos about what's SO AWESOME in the 50 states!<br />
<br />
UPDATE: The postcards are beginning to come in, and the kids are enjoying them so much! I decided to display my postcards with the picture side showing and a photocopy of the written side underneath. That way the kids can enjoy both sides. I went over the project with each class (K-4th) so all of them would know what we're doing. I also made my bulletin board in the hallway, so everyone can see when a new postcard has been added. We are having a lot of fun with this project! I'll post a photo soon!That Library Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02319316366626816941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694841406516996869.post-46116046544825900862018-07-30T18:53:00.003-05:002018-08-06T20:50:17.869-05:00It's Back to the Books!And the winners are...

March was a beautiful, busy month filled with reading at my school! (So, this blog had to simmer on the back burner for a while!)
What was going on? Well, I wanted to do something different for Read across America week, so I ran my first read-a-thon fundraiser... back-to-back with our spring book fair... which swwished right into spring break...during which we traveled to Texas to see Chip and Joanna's Magnolia Market. (LOVED IT!) Not one to squander spare moments, I battled a little strep throat, helped my son find his first house (at the ripe old age of 24) AND attended an out-of-state funeral. It was a month with lots of happy and sad all smooshed together.
But...I'm thinking you probably only want to hear about the bookish stuff, huh? ;)
For a few years now, I've wanted to try a "Read-a-thon.com" project. My goals were to boost our collection, buy a half-dozen BreakoutEDU kits, and outfit a mobile STEM cart for my teachers to check out. The website calculator said ny school could potentially earn $53,000!!! Yeah, right. (But hey... you never know until you try!)
I got permission from my boss, and decided that I would be happy to double my book fair proceeds. Honestly, I had no idea what I was getting into, but my experience has turned out to be really good!(And I have to give HUGE KUDOS to my school's teachers for jumping in and supporting the cause!)
I planned out my two-week timeline to be the week BEFORE Read across America and then the week of -- when the book fair would be delivered, and we'd be browsing and making wish lists!) Lots of opportunities for getting those reading minutes in!
A fellow teacher (who happens to be the Teacher Tipster guy -- how lucky am I?!) got the ball rolling by planning out a fun two weeks for his firsties. He came up with daily reading activities that the kids could "track" on their dashbaords for reading minutes. He shared his ideas with his team, and with me, and he let me share them with the whole school. THAT got everyone excited! (Thank you, Mr. Smith!) Each grade level came up with fun ideas for indoor and outdoor reading jaunts -- stinky feet reading, flashlight reading, campsite reading, cool breeze reading, tell-a-joke day reading... the list went on and on... and the read-a-thon was a huge success! I'll have the final number in about a week to share with you!
<b>July 24, 2018</b>
Goodness... this little blog was rocking along there for a bit, but I got sidetracked with school projects - a grant, a book fair, a read-a-thon... So sorry! (You probably know how that goes, right?) We'll catch up soon -- I promise! (I've missed you, for true!)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ahhhhh...this has been one of those lazy weekends. I've been getting over a yucky case of strep and haven't felt like getting out with my germy self, but I knew it was time to put the head chef hat back on and figure something out to feed these folks. (Super Bowl Sunday and all that, you know? Thought I should make an effort.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pinterest to the rescue... a few Instant Pot recipes came across my feed today and one of them caused me to pause enough to think --- "Hey. I think we've got most of this stuff." Winner winner -- Instant Pot Cheeseburger Mac Dinner! As an added bonus, the recipe had <span style="color: #38761d;"><b>thyme</b></span> in it... hmmm. My little sister sent me an <a href="http://dailyhealthkeeper.com/thyme-natural-remedies/" target="_blank">article</a> this week that said <span style="color: #38761d;"><b>thyme</b></span> and strep are not friends ------- or words to that effect. SOLD.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, the recipe. I had to sub out a LOT more than I expected, but it turned out very well. They gobbled it up and deemed it delicious. The hubby told me it was "goulash." I had no idea. Anyway, my Instant Pot Mini Duo and I are quite the team -- and no one went hungry. Yay. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the FoodySchmoody's blog <a href="http://foodyschmoodyblog.com/instant-pot-cheeseburger-mac/" target="_blank">recipe</a> that saved me today - and down below I've added my changes. (Remember, I've been sick. I guess we really were out of everything!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />I didn't have an onion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used Paula Deen Silly Salt instead of regular salt because, well, I like that salt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't measure the pepper, but gave it 7-8 good shakes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made SURE to get that thyme in -- and them I sprinkled in just a dab more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have any beef broth, but water worked. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I added 2 T. of McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning to make up for the beef broth. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I subbed 7 wedges of Laughing Cow Pepper Jack for the cheddar. And, I found about a cup of mozzarella to throw over the top. It worked.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My macaroni was closer to 10 oz. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It fed the masses...well, us... and it was good.... filled our tummies, made the house smell yummy, and gave me one more Instant Pot Mini Duo success! (Oh, how I'm growing to love that little pot! I'm digging the whole Strega Nona vibe, too.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
May the strep and flu stay far away from you. (Yes, I blew three kisses.) It's what Strega Nona would do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have a great week!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

When I was a brand-new kindergarten teacher back in the mid-1980s (!!!) I was lucky to find ANY book about Groundhog's Day! Now there are lots of choices with facts and fiction galore, and Groundhug Day is a winner!<br />
<br />
Anne Marie Pace has come up with a heart-warming tale of a moose who is plannning a Valentine's Day party with friends. He wants his buddy Groundhog to be a part of the fun, but he is worried. If Groundhog sees his shadow, he'll go back to sleep for 6 more weeks -- and miss the party! Moose and friends begin to brainstorm how they can make sure Groundhog DOESN'T see that shadow!<br />
<br />
Then, they switch gears and decide to show Groundhog how much FUN shadows can be! This book would be perfect to introduce a science lesson about shadows, an art lesson about making silhouettes, or some dramatic play with shadow puppets! Grab it at Amazon!That Library Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02319316366626816941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694841406516996869.post-80226693828088117722018-01-25T20:24:00.000-06:002018-01-25T20:24:03.672-06:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'd like to send a big shout out tonight to Cora Ellsworth of Perma-Bound books. I had some issues with a 2017 order, and right before Christmas break, I sent an email to Loyd Harris. In January, I received a detailed letter explaining that Loyd was retiring due to health reasons. (By the way, he's a great guy who has served Arkansas well, and I certainly wish him the best!)<br />
<br />
When I contacted Cora, she had already started working on my issue... and within DAYS, replacement books were on my desk! WOW! I was surprised at how quickly everything was settled! This is a very popular series in my library media center, so I'm especially pleased to have these back in circulation! I'm so thankful for excellent customer service, and I think we're in very good hands with Cora!That Library Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02319316366626816941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694841406516996869.post-84994010666144615582018-01-15T18:45:00.003-06:002018-01-15T18:58:27.543-06:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've been out of school today to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Last week in my library, we read one of the nominees on the Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award list. It was a heart-breaking topic, but a good story for students to know and talk about. If you haven't read it, grab a copy. (The author is Michael S. Bandy.)</div>

At this hour, the evening news is taunting us with....the possibility of a snow day! What is it that makes the possibility of a snow day so exciting -- whether you're 5 or... well, a WHOLE lot older than 5?? My mother-in-law from upper Michigan is visiting -- AND scoffing at our snow possibility! Her comment... "You get out of school FOR THAT MUCH?!" (Er, or that little.) Yes. Yes, we do. ;) (Love you, Marjorie!) </div>

I've been under the weather for a few weeks, so I'm especially praying in the "please let's stay home" direction! I would love to shake this before I head back again, but we'll see! The little graphic below was inspired by conversations overheard in my library media center last week! Oh, how I love my littles!</div>

I've done a pretty scary thing this week. I've asked for honest feedback from 4th graders about my new library media program! This year I've begun a radical (well, for me) new library program with a private theme of -- <i>"How about I TALK AT you less... and you TALK TO each other and </i><i><u>DO</u> more."</i> (Cue the Frozen theme..."Let it go, let it go..." It's a cute song, but hard to do.)<br />
<br />
After about 30-something years of being a teacher/library media specialist, I've had the pleasure of reinventing myself several times over. It's good -- keeps my practice fresh! I'll admit, this new approach has not been without growing pains, but, it has filled my library with a new sense of wonder, discovery -- and okay, yes -- NOISE! Lots of happy, excited, fussy, collaborative, team-building noise!<br />
<br />
My new program merges Arkansas library media frameworks with our new computer science frameworks, while sprinkling in a healthy dose of makerspace! Oh yes, it has been a hot mess somedays, but the feedback is telling me that they LOVE IT.<br />
<br />
I've actually been kind of touched and surprised by their thoughtful comments. They've told me what they like about our weekly rotation of TEN centers. They've made suggestions, and they've asked for more of this and less of that. I've been shocked that they like the OPAC center and the research center. They thought the book fair math center was "way too hard!" Of COURSE, they love the robots... but a few would pass on the listening center. Nearly everyone ADORES our version of MakerSpace -- so... I'm glad I didn't sell that old thing in a garage sale! Who knew?!<br />
<br />
Across the board, they hate it when we have to skip a week and have "regular library time" for some reason. (They were perfectly okay with skipping centers for book fair though!) We're getting close to finishing our first 10-center rotation, and during feedback time, they were clammoring to know "What's Next?!"<br />
<br />
I'm more surprised that anything to find that my new program has bumped me up a notch on the "happy teacher scale." Truly, it has been hard to turn the responsibility of teaching and learning over to them -- but maybe it has been kind of healthy for me, too. If nothing else, I've gone from a librarian who was maybe just slightly-burned-out-around-the-edges to feeling renewed and reinvigorated about teaching again. Not bad for this stage of the game.That Library Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02319316366626816941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694841406516996869.post-4548087717646714192018-01-09T21:02:00.001-06:002018-01-10T06:47:34.438-06:00On the long list of things that I'm thankful for, as a teacher/librarian, GO NOODLE is pretty close to the top! It's a database of little 2-3 minute exercise routines, and they are great for stretching, making some purposeful noise, and getting the wiggles under control with my K-1 library classes. (Plus, leading Go Noodle adds to my Fitbit count, so hey -- there you go!)<br />
<br />
Right now, I think the kids' favorites are "Run the Red Carpet," ANYTHING "Moose on the Loose" Wobbly Man, and PopSeeKo. If you are an Arkansas teacher, Arkansas Children's Hospital has blessed us by providing a premium subscription! (THANK YOU!)<br />
<br />
Honestly, if you haven't tried it, you're missing out! Kids can't sit all day -- and neither can we. Get up and "Go Noodle" -- you'll love it!<br />
